
5 Essential Checks Before Turning On Your Chinese Diesel Heater This Winter
Firing up your Chinese diesel heater for the first autumn cold snap can quickly turn into a headache. Whether your unit is mounted in a campervan, boat, shed, or workshop, a dry fuel pump, low battery voltage, or a dirty glow plug will trigger an instant lockout—leaving you cold and staring at an E01, E03, or E10 error code.
Before you hit the power button this winter, run through these 5 essential pre-flight checks to prevent smoke, misfires, and prime your system for a clean first start.

1. Charge Your Battery (Prevent E01 & E03 Start-Up Voltage Drops)
The most common autumn issue isn’t a broken heater—it’s just a tired battery.
When your diesel heater first turns on, the glow plug sucks a massive burst of power
Your resting voltage display might look fine. But the moment you hit start, that initial draw causes a heavy drop. This triggers an E01 or E03 code instantly.
How to check: Charge your battery fully before your first attempt. If you hear the heater try to start, click a couple of times, and immediately shut down with an error code, low power is almost always your main suspect.
2. Manually Prime the Fuel Line (Avoid E10 Lockout Errors)
After sitting idle all summer, fuel naturally slips back down the line toward the tank, leaving air pockets trapped in the hose. But here is the mistake most people make: they hit the prime button and pump diesel blindly straight into the heater. If you do that, you risk flooding the combustion chamber, soaking the mesh, and filling your garage or van with thick white smoke.
Disconnect & Catch it in a Jar
- Before you touch the controller, pull the fuel hose off the bottom inlet of the heater unit and pop the end into a small glass jar or diesel-safe container. Now you can see exactly what’s coming out without risking a flooded heater.

How to prime it on the controller:
- Enter Prime Mode: Press and hold the Down Arrow and OK buttons together until
OFF(or a timer duration) appears on the display. - Set Your Time & Start: Use the arrows to set your priming runtime, then press OK (or Up) so the screen switches to
ON. - Watch the Fuel Line & Stop Priming:Watch the clear fuel line near the heater inlet. Once you see fuel reach the pump and fill the pipe completely without air bubbles, press the Off (or Down) button to stop the priming mode.
- Inspect Your Fuel Quality & Filter: Old fuel stored over summer can degrade or collect moisture. Check your inline fuel filter for dirt or dark sediment, and make sure it is installed vertically with the arrow pointing in the direction of fuel flow toward the pump.
- Watch the Jar: The pump will start its steady click-click-click. Let it run into your jar until you see smooth, bubble-free diesel spurting out of the pipe.
- Stop & Reconnect: Hit OK to stop the prime, push the hose back onto the heater inlet, and tighten your clip.
Now your line is 100% full of fresh fuel, the air is purged, your combustion chamber is completely dry, and your first start attempt will catch straight away.
Why taking two minutes to do this saves you a massive headache:
- Gets the trapped air out: Pushes those stubborn air gaps straight out of the hose so you aren’t waiting around for diesel to arrive.
- Hits the burner instantly: Makes sure fresh fuel is waiting right at the pipe the second the glow plug gets hot, so it lights on the very first click.
- Saves your pump from working overtime: Keeps that little pulse pump from hammering away dry for five minutes trying to pull fuel from an empty line.
- Stops instant error lockouts: Prevents the controller from giving up, timing out, and throwing a annoying E10 code on your screen.
If you ever need to access the technician menu on these standard blue-screen/OLED units to tweak settings, the menu access code is 1234—not the generic 1688 code quoted on general forums).
3. Inspect Intakes & Exhausts for Summer Blockages
While your heater was sleeping over summer, local wildlife was active. Spiders, mud daubers, and dust frequently build up inside open pipes.

- Combustion Air Intake: A blocked intake starves the chamber of oxygen, causing incomplete combustion, black soot buildup, and E08 (Flame Failure) errors.
- Warm Air Outlet / Ducting: Dust or crushed ducting restricts airflow, causing the heat exchanger to overheat rapidly and trigger an E05 (Overheat) shutdown.
- Exhaust Tube: Check that the silencer or exhaust tip hasn’t accumulated rust, dirt, or moisture.
The Fix: Take off the flexible ducting and blow through or vacuum out the intake and exhaust lines. Make sure the hot air outlet inside your space is free from clutter.
4. Inspect Your Fuel Quality & Filter
Old diesel sitting in a tank all summer goes stale, attracts moisture, and turns into a thick varnish that clogs up tiny filter meshes. If your fuel looks dark, cloudy, or has water droplets settling at the bottom of the filter, your heater is going to struggle to burn cleanly.
What to do:
- Check the Filter: Take a look through the clear casing of your inline fuel filter. If you see black speckles, rust flakes, or cloudy liquid, swap the filter out—they only cost a couple of quid and save your pump from jamming.
- Smell & Visual Check: Uncap your tank and check the diesel. If it smells sour or looks like dark tea instead of clear amber/green, drain it out and top up with fresh fuel before running your heater.
5.Match Your Controller Setting to Your Heater Size (Stop Over-Fueling)
A massive number of cheap Chinese heaters come straight out of the factory misconfigured from the vendor—for example, a 5kW heater body arriving pre-set with 8kW fuel delivery parameters, or someone running a 5kW unit on a 2kW setting.
That misconfiguration causes the heater to run way too rich, blow thick smoke, choke the chamber with carbon, or fail to hit full temperature. Setting the correct body size rating in the controller fixes the baseline pump frequency natively without messing around with complex altitude modes or manual Hz tuning.

Once you’ve checked your battery, primed the line, and cleared the pipes, it’s time for the first burn:
- Start the unit and let it complete its full ignition cycle until it stabilizes.
- Access your settings: Make sure your min/max pump frequency settings are set appropriately (access via controller menu code 1234).
- Run on HIGH for 20 minutes: Running the heater on high heat for its first cycle burns off any oil residue, dust, or moisture that accumulated inside the heat exchanger over summer.
